Grade 3 Bell’s Palsy: Photos, Eye Tape and Daily Spasms

Day 3 · 1:34:02 · Carole Avoine

  • 📸 Before-and-after photos showed 88 days of paralysis; she still tapes her eye shut to sleep and gets neck cramps in the shower.
  • 👓 Grade 3 paralysis forces sunglasses outdoors, running eye/nose/saliva when eating, straw-only drinking, and a paralyzed eardrum.
  • 😖 Horrible facial and internal spasms worsen with fatigue or stress, sometimes silencing her speech.

Ongoing facial paralysis limits basic functions years later.

And I would like us to see the photo of you before. So tell us when that was. That was in 2020. Yeah, so 2020, just before my mother passed away. And then let's show a picture of you 88 days after your AstraZeneca vaccine. So I had been paralyzed for 88 days. I couldn't close my eye, and it took 7 months before I could close my eye again. Tell us what you had to do to sleep. Well, today still, I still have to use medical tape over my eye in order to sleep, because if I try to force my eyes closed, I get spasms. And if I take a shower, I have to close my eyes while I'm washing my hair and, and I end up getting cramps.

So imagine the type of cramp that you would have on a toe or on your calf. Well, I get these kinds of cramps in my neck. And can you describe your symptoms? So the symptoms that you had and that you still live with today. So I have a grade 3 paralysis. It means that I can't go outside without my sunglasses. When I eat, my, my eye runs. I, I salivate. My nose runs. I can't use a glass. I, I have to use a straw when I drink. There are certain things that I cannot eat anymore. And for my ear here, I have a paralyzed eardrum, so the sound is different in my two ears, and I get horrible spasms. And at first the spasms weren't too bad, but what happened is that two years after my paralysis, I had just resumed work.
